The Award was created by Vittorio Bianchini in 2016 in Umbria with the aim of giving a well-deserved recognition to those who protect and safeguard the planet sea. The name Atlantis intends to evoke the ancient mythology of the island of Atlantis which, about 9,600 years before Christ, dominated a vast area of the Mediterranean basin. It is said that Atlantis would have sunk in "a single day of unexpected misfortune" by Poseidon, the undisputed God of the seas. As Donovan, a popular English singer, in his song "Atlantis" imagines the regents of Atlantis presented in the world as twelve ambassadors of divine nature: "the poetare, the scientist, the magus and various other gods", so does the creator of the Prize - Vittorio Bianchini who impagines these figures nowadays as the “Alfieri” who, animated by passion and wisdom, protect the marine environment. In its five-year history, the Atlantis Award has been awarded to various sea operators, precisely the "Alfieri", who are active in various fields: from scientific research, to the dissemination of information, to underwater competition, to exploration and recovery of harmful substances. All animated in promoting the culture of the sea, equal to 80% of resources, history, tradition and bio-diversity of the planet earth, and respect surrounding behaviors of the marine ecosystem and the universe. In the imaginary podium the "Alfieri" are selected annually by Vittorio Bianchini and a committee of experts belonging to various marine selected non profits who are undisputed and convinced supporters of the health and balance of the biological environment and the surrounding terrestrial universe.
